My HR Journey: A Passion for Organisational Design & Development

"It is totally pointless spending time and money attracting top talent if you're not considering the work environment they're joining." To retain new hires, make sure your company culture is worth staying for.

As I reflect on my journey over the past 4 years since embarking on my CPHR journey with AHRI, I am proud to say that after a long career always working in HR in some form or function, I have further developed a passion for organisational design and developing people.

I see the ultimate value of a holistic approach to training and developing people, promoting wellbeing, and mindfulness in the workplace — and the very real risks associated with not holistically managing the psychological contract with your employees.

Today I launched Hemingway HR Consultancy. As I share my journey of building my consultancy with others, I feel vulnerable yet excited to make a difference to businesses and their amazing people, with a holistic approach that aligns with my own mission, goals and values.

The Importance of Company Culture

Company culture is central to the success of any business. As a business owner, company culture means creating an environment that fosters collaboration, innovation, and inspires employees to reach their full potential. Employees are the foundation of any successful enterprise, and it's essential to build a culture that aligns with their values, motivates them, and inspires them to meet business objectives.

Factors that Contribute to Employee Turnover

There are various reasons why employees leave a company, including poor leadership, lack of development opportunities, and toxic work environments. Understanding these factors is the first step to addressing them proactively — before your best people walk out the door.

Creating a Supportive Environment

It is crucial to create a supportive environment that values employees, prioritises their professional development, and promotes individual wellbeing and mindfulness. Investing in employee wellbeing — such as offering flexible work schedules and mental health support — can also help attract and retain top talent.

Achieving Business Success by Investing in People

Who doesn't want to spring out of bed, go to work, feel their work is valued, and find meaning and purpose in what they do?

There are several proactive steps businesses can take towards employee commitment and daily enjoyment in their workplace:

  • Offering flexible working arrangements
  • Creating a sense of community among employees
  • Implementing effective communication strategies
  • Providing training opportunities for career development
  • Recognition — sometimes it can be as simple as saying thank you, or giving out awards or bonuses for outstanding performance
