Same behaviour, different reasons

Two people go quiet in meetings for completely different reasons. Here is why motivation matters more than labels.

Same behaviour, different reasons

The quiet person in the room

Picture two people on your team. Both go quiet in meetings. Both stop contributing when the conversation gets heated. Both seem disengaged when a new initiative is announced.

Same behaviour. Same observable pattern.

Different reasons entirely.

One of them goes quiet because they are processing. They need time to think before they speak. When they do contribute, it is considered and precise. Silence is not withdrawal. It is preparation.

The other goes quiet because they feel unheard. They have raised this kind of idea before and it went nowhere. They have learned that speaking up in this room does not change anything. Silence is not preparation. It is protection.

If you treat them the same way, you will get it wrong for both of them.

Why this matters for leaders

Most leadership development focuses on behaviour. What people do, how they communicate, what their output looks like.

PRINT® works differently. It focuses on the unconscious motivation underneath the behaviour. The why, not just the what.

When you understand what drives someone at their core, you stop trying to fix behaviour and start working with the person. That is a fundamentally different kind of leadership.

What PRINT® actually is

PRINT® is a profiling tool developed by The Paul Hertz Group. It identifies nine unconscious motivators, the core needs that drive how people show up at their best and what happens when those needs are not met.

It is not a personality type. It is not a label. It is a framework for understanding what someone needs to do their best work, and what gets in the way when they are under pressure.

I became a certified PRINT® practitioner because I kept seeing the same problem in organisations. Leaders who genuinely wanted to support their people but did not have a language for what they were observing. Coaches who could see that something was off but could not name it. Teams that were technically capable but kept getting stuck in the same dynamics.

PRINT® gives you that language.

The practical difference

Here is what changes when you understand someone's unconscious motivator.

You stop taking behaviour personally. When someone pushes back hard in a meeting, you understand whether that is their way of engaging deeply with an idea, or a sign that they feel their core need for control is being threatened. Those require completely different responses.

You stop projecting your own motivation onto others. What energises you does not energise everyone. What feels like support to you might feel like micromanagement to someone else.

You start having better conversations. Not because you have a script, but because you understand what the other person actually needs from the interaction.

A note on the quiet person

Going back to the two people at the start.

The one who needs processing time needs you to create space. Ask for their thoughts after the meeting. Give them the agenda in advance. Do not interpret silence as disengagement.

The one who feels unheard needs you to demonstrate that their contribution matters. Follow up on ideas they raise. Acknowledge when something they said influenced a decision. Rebuild the trust that speaking up is worth it.

Same behaviour. Completely different leadership response.

That is what PRINT® makes possible.
